ANSWERS

  1. What is Download Direct (also known as DLD)?
Download Direct is a download acceleration and management software program. It installs on your computer and takes control of the downloading functions normally performed by your browser. Download Direct is also known as DLD.

  2. I don't use the internet all the time, could DLD still benefit me?
Absolutely! Many people like to download music or movies occasionally. Wouldn't it be great to download these files in less than a quarter of the time it would normally take? Even if you don't download a lot, the resume functionality allows you to shut down your computer whilst downloading a file and continue from where you were.

  3. How exactly does DLD speed up my downloads?
The best way to illustrate this is imagine drinking from one straw, now imagine drinking from 16 straws at once. Of course the more straws the quicker the drink will be consumed. Each straw in this scenario is referred to as a connection in DLD. Standard web browsers only make 1 to 2 connections per file. DLD can make up to 16 simultaneous connections per file.

  4. Can I control the speed of the download?
DLD allows you to set the number of connections made per file. This can range anywhere between 1 to 16 connections. Less connections means slower speed. If you want to download files without affecting the speed of your web browsing, we recommend downloading files with 4 to 6 connections. DLD lets you set one speed for every download or choose a speed automatically based on its file size.

  5. Does DLD support the Web Browser that I use?
Currently DLD supports the following major web browsers:
    - Internet Explorer 4+
    - Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4+
    - Mozilla Firefox 1.5+
    - Opera 4+.

  6. Can I temporarily disable and enable DLD whenever I like?
Yes! DLD runs in your system tray (the small icons usually found on the bottom right hand side of your screen). Simply right-click the DLD icon and tick or untick the Integrate With Browsers option. You may need to restart your web browser for the changes to take affect.

  7. Some downloads are not going through DLD, why?
First make sure the extension of the file (such as PDF) is in the extensions support list (found in the Connections form under Preferences). DLD cannot catch some files automatically from the Mozila Firefox browser. These files can be added manually by right-clicking the link and copying the shortcut. DLD will automatically open the Add download dialog with this link ready to start downloading.

  8. Am I able to customise DLD to suit my internet use?
Of course! There are many preferences that let you customise the functionality of DLD. These preferences can be found in the Preferences menu on the left-hand side of the main window.

  9. What are file mirrors and what benefit do they have?
Often on the internet there are file servers that may host the same file that you are downloading. These file servers are known as mirrors. DLD will automatically choose the fastest mirror to download from. The fastest mirrors are generally those closest to your location.

  10. I am behind a proxy server/firewall, can DLD still work?
Sure can! You can specify your proxy settings within the Proxy form under Preferences. Please be aware that some older proxy servers may not support the resume and acceleration functionality.

  11. Are BitTorrent files supported?

  12. What happens to my download if something unexpected happens?
DLD has a safety feature that safeguards you from any loss of data. This is useful in the event that your computer crashes, you have a power failure, your internet is disconnected or the server goes offline. When you recover from the unexpected mishap, you can simply resume the download from where it was.

  13. Why can't I resume some downloads?
Most servers on the internet allow files to be resumed at a later stage however some are configured in a way that make it unable to resume the file. Also some older proxy servers don't support downloads to be resumed.

  14. What functions can I perform with the downloading files?

  15. Can I automate the downloading of my files without prompting me?
Yes! You can configure DLD to run silently in the background and download files into a specified folder without asking you or opening any windows. The perfect use for this would be downloading a large number of MP3's from a website into your Music folder.

  16. Can I automate an event to occur after the download finishes?
Yes! Each download allows you to set an event to occur after it finishes downloading. These events are: Close program, Logoff user, Shut down computer, Disconnect from internet (dial-up). You can also run the file or open its containing folder.

  17. Am I able to set a schedule to have a file download at a certain time?

  18. I like to manage my files, am I able to do that through DLD?
All lists throughout DLD are sortable allowing you to better organise your downloads. Just click on the column headers of the list and the entire list will be sorted in ascending /descending order by that column. Sorting by dates is generally the best way to keep track of your files. DLD also has a great feature called My Folders. You can add any number of your favourite folders that you would commonly download to into the My Folders list. This allows you to quickly download to one of these folders by the click of a button.

  19. An error occurs while trying to download a file, why?
There could be a number of reasons an error would occur. The most common is error 404 which means the file you are trying to download no longer exists. When the error occurs, an error dialog will popup showing its general description. If you feel the error could be related to DLD, try disabling browser integration (right-click the DLD icon and untick Integrate With Browsers), and then retry download that file. If it is successful, please contact DLD with the link to the file you were trying to download and a description of the problem.
